The Alley Cat is, quite simply, the best casual low-cut men's shoe out there. It marries style and function into a timeless, classic product that I hope keeps on being produced, since I can no longer find it in any store. Growing up, I was curious of and eventually envied my classmates in school wearing these (there were quite a bit of them), and when I finally got my first pair ten years ago, it became part of my own school uniform for a bit. With regards to comfort, it's not the most foot-tickling sensation out there, but it IS very nice on the feet, and even at the end of a long day at class, I still didn't want to take them off.

The quality is what led me to give them away in favor of other shoes, though I partally regret it now. Construction is amazing; I expect a decade or more out of these. However, the leather - I got the black smooth - bubbled and started cracking about 5 years on, to the point that the recipient actually peeled everything off to make it look better.

With regards to style, well, its eye-catching design was what piqued my interest in the first place, and it is one of the most handsome and cool-looking shoes I've ever seen - but the reason I said it's the best casual shoe is because I wouldn't catch myself wearing these underneath suits. It's too clunky for them; I would rather wear something slimmer. My opinion is that these shoes fall strictly into casual territory. Apart from that, they go really well with the most relaxed of T-shirt-and-jeans looks, but also something a bit smarter (but still not business-ready) such as a button-down and khakis. The thick sole is useful for rather inclement environments, though since it's a low-cut shoe, rain may pose a problem. I do walk a lot, and these babies fit the bill for such. They're also real nifty for driving, especially since I usually drive in work boots.

As I regret giving them away, I will be buying them again soon, but in the suede-like material instead. Thanks, Skechers.

Love the way the shoes feel and look, however, the first pair I purchased began "bubbling" after just a few days. The replacement pair are now cracking after 2 months of wear. My recent purchase of the brown alley cats, which are still in the box, will probably be my last purchase of skechers alley cats, as there has been something wrong with the leather on my first two pair. Will let you know about the brown skechers alley cats that I've just purchased. The first 2 pair of skechers have been of very poor quality leather and I do not expect any difference from my most recent purchase.

    Comments about Alley Cats:

I have bought many pairs of these shoes and they are a daily wear for me. I have a extra pair or two in the closet in case the shoes are not in stock when needed.

I get about 6 months out of them and then the leather cracks. But I still enjoy wearing them.

      Comments about Alley Cats:

I have been wearing Alley Cats or Tom Cats from Skechers for many years. They are the only shoes I am able to wear my Podiatrist made supports in comortably and still be somewhat stylish. It seems like they might be phasing these out as i am having a hard time finding them . . . even on line and even at one of your outlet stores. Luckily a gentleman named Matt in your Johnson Creek store found a pair of Tom Cats in brown somewhere in another store out of state. He looked for these because there were no more size 11 Alley Cats anyhwere to be found. I hope these will not be phased out but if so i will look to Skechers and hopefully I can find something that I can wear comfortably with my supports. I have plantar faciitis and these shoes do help me everyday!!!

Alley Cats are well suited to holding orthotics and have very good support. Unfortunately they are not available in brown anymore. I assume the black model will also be unavailable when current stock is depleted. Too bad, It was a good run.

            Q:

I'm seeing two pictures of the Alley Cat in black, one in a suede looking upper, the other in a smooth leather, which the description states. Is the BKS111 a suede upper finish, which is what I want? Thanks!

The BKS color is as pictured, it has the more suede-looking matte finish upper. The BOL has the shinier look.

It looks like the next in-stock date for that particular color of the Alley Cats will be early November. However, the same BOL color in the virtually similar design Tom Cats shoe style 6618 is in stock now in a size 8.

It's a good idea to give your Alley Cats a treatment with a product such as the Skechers Water Proofer spray to keep the finish looking its best.

            Q:

The Alley Cat 7111 comes in Black BOL and Black BKS. Can you please explain the differences in detail and do either of them have the "shiny" veneer instead of textured leather? My recently deceased BKS pair lasted years but don't look as "textured" as the picture. They had no veneer and were smooth and sturdy.
Asked on 9/23/2016 by Socialtool from Sacramento CA

            1 answer

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

The BOL is black oiled leather, it's the smoother and shinier of the two, but it's not a gloss or satin finish leather. The BKS is a more sueded look leather that we call scuff-resistant matte leather. For a shiny black shoe you may want to look at the men's Mark Nason dress shoes, the Caswell models, or the Gretna work shoes.

            Q:

I have been wearing Skechers Tomcat/Alleycat for 15 years and they are the only shoe comfortable enough other than 300-dollar pedorthic specialty shoes.

However, the surface of the Skechers has always tended to flake. In one case, half had flaked away within a week.

What model do you recommend to avoid this? A matte or suede rather than smooth finish, perhaps? Or is this a known problem that you have specifically fixed?

              A:

I would recommend the matte finish versions of the Tom Cats and Alley Cats - they have a more natural finish than the gloss leather versions. Many customers are also tempted to use color shoe polish on the gloss finish shoes, which tends to dry out the finish and cause the flaking issue - instead I would recommend applying leather lotion or leather oil rather than shoe polish.

              A:

The Alley Cats certainly should be durable and comfortable for wearing as a work shoe, though they do not have a Slip Resistant outsole or safety toe, if your workplace has those requirements. There are similar looks available in the Work Shoe category with those features.
